'Monsters vs Aliens'

I get it, I get it. Animated films are largely aimed at kids. But do they have to be so dumb and dull?
I mean really, I did not crack a smile watching this.
Not a one.
Am I asking too much for these studios to make a film that makes me feel something other than "when does this end?".
Last night I re-watched 'The Iron Giant'. Now that is how you do it.

Grade - D+

'Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen'

Someone please make Michael Bay watch all his films in a row, then sit him in front of 'Star Trek', 'District 9', 'The Dark Knight' and many other films that involve heros, CGI, explosions until he sees the difference with what he makes (a loud, ugly mess for people with ADD).
I actually think that man suffers with ADD and needs to get some serious help.
Here is what was wrong with the film:The plot. How can you follow it? Make it simple. Deceptions need a new home and do not want to share it. See Michael Bay - EASY! Please cut out a explosion that would only take up 5 minutes and pay a screenwriter.
Shia LaBeouf. He acts like he has ADD too. When you find yourself wish to see more of Megan Fox you know you lead is not very good.
What I love about the cartoon and the toys is seeing how they transform, and it making sense. Here they make no sense in terms of scale and transformability. And do not get me started on Devastator. He was the toy I always wanted and never got. Here they turned him into a giant hoover. The only reason this film does not get an 'F' grade is because of Soundwave. He was cool.

On second thought. Just retire Michael Bay, he is not worth keeping around. I only watched this because the child in me demanded it.

Summer Blockbuster Trailer Crazy

Can't really tell what it looks like as well, night time shows and editing can hide many many fx flaws. Still the kid in me is FREAKING OUT!
I hope Soundwave has the same voice though!

Am I one of the few who is not excited about 'Star Trek' ? The guy playing Kirk looks like a reject from 'Dawson's Creek'. Anywhooo....new trailer here.

Will Farrell's 'Land of the Lost does look like it is going to be fun. Most likely a big family hit for him. The crab made me laugh so much...no idea why.



I laughed before I could help myself. 'Year One' is going to be a hit, but a good film, that all depends on how clever the screenplay is. judging by this it could work really well.



'Angels and Demons'. Oh Jesus. Ewan McGregor sounds like the lucky charms leprechaun.



'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra'. I was not a G.I. Joe kid, no matter how much friends and parents tried. I was more Transformers and He-Man (and Barbie and My Little Pony, but that is a WHOLE other blog post!)
Any who...the trailer looks kind of awesome and eye popping, but will most likely be all Gloss and shine but no substance....but hey it is the summer.

Mini Review – Transformers

So have seen two movie this weekend, and I enjoyed both of them greatly. First lets get my boy hood obsession out of the way.

At the beginning of this movie I sat down and began to watch it as a critic. Finding faults in the opening sequence, and getting really upset. I was going to be disappointed. The acting was lazy, the dialogue dumb, and the plot was full of holes. Then I remembered I was in a movie theater watching a summer blockbuster. I then told myself to lighten up, sit back, and be entertained by the visual candy.
Once I did that I discovered that Transformers was a fantastic little ride of a movie!
There's nothing here that is more than meets the eye however, ‘cause what you expect is what you get. To talk about plot would be a pointless exercise. There is not much of one. Rather, you need to go to see this for the pure enjoyment of seeing those wonderful toys you played with as a child, bought to life.
Michael Bay's effects-laden extravaganza is all power packed, happy meal tie in, ‘Buy me that Mommy’, jaw to the floor, and hands clapping in giddy glee type of film.
This is a movie about robots that transform….that is all you need to know. The story line is superbly dumb, like they were in the original cartoons. The robot dialogue is the same, full of grandiose meaningful laments on how humans are a young race, but they have such kindness…yadda yadda yadda.
Yet it all made me smile, remembering watching these cartoons, and waiting for the robots to transform.

As for the actors, well Shia LaBeouf was likeably manic through out, but nothing special. The two best performances came from Anthony Anderson as a computer hacker (in a stupid side plot), and Julie White as Shia’s slightly intoxicated mother who concerns herself with her sons masturbatory habits as well as her bush (garden variety). She really made me laugh out loud she did.
But you need to see this for the seamless special effects and action sequences. They were brilliant! Some of the best I have ever seen. The character work on the robots was wonderful, especially with Bumblebee (Mommy I want one!!).
Yes this is a big dumb summer blockbuster, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. B-

Transformers – More than meets the I

I was totally sceptical about this film, especially since Michael Bay has made some pretty bad movies. However he does know a thing or two about an action sequence. I was totally addicted to Transformers as a kid, and sadly I still collect them, but only the special ones. I for one do not care about who does the voice of the robots, or if they are not exact replicas of the original series, let the fan boys and geeks squabble about all of that. I am of the opinion that everything needs to evolve, so as long as the changes look believable and are true to the original ideals of the creators and above all is good, I am firmly on board. Especially after seeing the below pics!
Whatever it ends up like, I will just be excited to see a car transform into a robot. It will be a child hood dream realised.
