Box - Love my box

Time once again for the weekly update of my box (will I ever get tired of that joke…nah). Today I wanted to concentrate on dance music. This is mainly because very soon I will be flying off to my fav city on the planet New York. While there (although it is for work) I tend to party and have one hell of a laugh. I leave on Saturday, so anyone who can advise me on what to do/see please do so!

Get Down - Groove Armada feat. Stush. A brilliant combination of house and grid to get your head bopping and your booty shaking. Can imagine someone doing a combination of the dutty wine and crunk to this.

Avalon - Juliet. This is one of those classic house tracks that has the vocal that can break you heart. Dancing through the tears.

Shiny Disco Balls (Ft Jessica Eve) - Who Da Funk. This is one sexy song, and as the base line kicks in all you want to do is find someone on the dance floor to take your clothes off with.

The little movies that matter

”We have a pair of unfortunate situations here. A man who has nothing in his life except his work, that is unfortunate. And then by a stroke of bizarre chance, he finds someone who makes that not true for a day or two. But then, suddenly, it seems as though the price that has to be paid for that ray of light is some kind of... disgrace. It doesn't seem quite fair.”

I wanted to write a review of “The Girl in the Café” but it seems that in doing so, I will give far too much away. If you decide, out of curiosity, to rent this movie you will be rewarded. If I were to write a full review it would rob you of the chance of discovering this beautiful and funny story, from writer Richard Curtis , as it unfolds.
This romantic comedy unfolds with ease into a political drama. Lawrence ( a hysterically reserved, and awkward Bill Nighy ), a spindly, self-effacing civil servant, is a senior researcher for the Chancellor of the Exchequer, preparing for a G-8 summit that will determine the scope of the world's effort to reduce extreme poverty. In a crowded café, he chats awkwardly with Gina (The luminous and amazing Kelly MacDonald ), a young Scot with time on her hands.
They share a couple of meals, and he invites her to accompany him to the summit in Reykjavík. Once there, as romance blooms, Gina's past, Lawrence's work and proclivity to compromise, and the presence of ministers and presidents spur her to act.
Kelly MacDonald has been around forever. From her debut as the spunky school girl who seduces Ewan McGregor in “ Trainspotting ” to her lead role as the new maid to Maggie Smith in Robert Alman’s upstairs downstairs comedy “ Gosford Park ”.
She is one of those actresses that can easily fade into the background as she is so unassuming. In ‘The Girl in the Café” she uses ability so that when she takes action, it is all the more powerful. I hope her Emmy win for this will lead to a lot more work for her as I think she has real staying power in this industry.

A rather weak 'Heart'

Firstly I was one of those out there that really felt this role should have gone to a mixed race actress and not Angelina Jolie. Sure she has the looks to pass as Mariane Pearl who is of Afro-Cuban and Dutch ancestry, but could not of an actress such as Joy Bryant (pictured) or Rosario Dawson taken on this role? Sure the studios would have wanted a big name to get movie goers into the seats, but at what cost? What black/mixed/non white actress could have taken on the role on Ruby in ‘Cold Mountain’ and gotten awards attention, likely more deserved that lemon faces hamming. As long as Hollywood keeps diluting race down, how ever will this world unite?
Anyway the trailer for ‘ A Mighty Heart ’ looks a little, well, meh. Not feeling the drama, not feeling what I see of her performance, not really feeling that this is a movie people should be concerned with come awards season. See for yourself.

Ever since I heard that Madonna song I have been so curious about the quote, but have never seeked out looking for the movie "The Cement Garden". I will now as this clip (featuring the speech) has got me curious. I am also a fan of Charlotte Gainsbourg so I must really check it out!!

America - You can't handle the Truth!!!

Say what you will about Michael Moore , he gets people participating in an open dialogue and that is always a good thing. Of course his new documentary is gaining lots of heat, and it seems like once again it is the U.S. conservative government lighting the matches.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is under investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department for taking ailing Sept. 11 rescue workers to Cuba for a segment in his upcoming health-care documentary "Sicko" which promises to take the health-care industry to task the way Moore confronted America's passion for guns in " Bowling for Columbine " and skewered Bush over his handling of Sept. 11 in " Fahrenheit 9/11."
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control notified Moore in a letter dated May 2 that it was conducting a civil investigation for possible violations of the U.S. trade embargo restricting travel to Cuba. A copy of the letter was obtained Wednesday by the AP.
"This office has no record that a specific license was issued authorizing you to engage in travel-related transactions involving Cuba," Dale Thompson, OFAC chief of general investigations and field operations, wrote in the letter to Moore.
In March, Moore took about 10 ailing workers from the Ground Zero rescue effort in Manhattan for treatment in Cuba, said a person working with the filmmaker on the release of "Sicko." The person requested anonymity because Moore's attorneys had not yet determined how to respond.”


This sounds all too much like someone is trying to lay the groundwork to prevent America, and the rest of the world, from seeing this movie. Most other countries know that the U.S. heath-care system is broken and at times even deadly, but what the documentary will do is shock and re-educate many people. You know the U.S. government does not like re-education of it’s people unless authorized by them.

“Sicko" is Moore's followup to 2004's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a $100 million hit criticizing the Bush administration over Sept. 11. Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" won the 2002 Oscar for best documentary.

A dissection of the U.S. health-care system, "Sicko" was inspired by a segment on Moore's TV show "The Awful Truth," in which he staged a mock funeral outside a health-maintenance organization that had declined a pancreas transplant for a diabetic man. The HMO later relented.

Republican Sen. Fred Dalton Thompson , who assailed the filmmaker in a blog at National Review.com, has openly criticized Moore for distorting facts…unsurprisingly Thompson is EXTREMELY conservative. He is also the subject of speculation about a possible presidential run. Oh lord help us all.
In a letter in a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on Friday, Moore says that the White House may have opened the investigation for political reasons.

I am contacting you in light of the document sent to me dated May 2, 2007, which was received May 7, 2007 indicating that an investigation has been opened up with regards to a trip I took to Cuba with a group of Americans that included some 9/11 heroes in March 2007 related to the filming of my next documentary, on the American Healthcare system. SiCKO, which will be seen in theaters this summer, will expose the health care industry’s greed and control over America’s political processes. ” Read the rest here

What is exciting is when I looked on the IMDB earlier and saw THIS coming out in 2008.
Fahrenheit 9/11 1/2 which looks how in the wake of the 2004 United States Presidential election, Michael Moore continues to examine what happened to the United States after September 11, and how the Bush Administration allegedly used the tragic event to push forward its agenda for unjust wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Heee!!!! Clappy hands, clappy hands!!! I love this man.

Silk Trailer

We have yet another Oscar baity film from the lovely Keira Knightley.
This look gorgeous, and the score is beautiful but we do not get to see any of the acting like we did with the “Atonement” trailer. I wonder just what impact this will have on the Academy and movie goers. Still this should at least find a few nominations come Oscar time.

Linda Cardellini is set to star opposite Paul Walker in " Heaven Project ," an indie drama being directed by John Glenn.

The story follows an ex-con who is sentenced to death and wakes up from his lethal injection in a small Oregon town. Working as a groundskeeper for a mental hospital, he is told he was given a second chance by God but questions whether he ever really died.

Cardellini will play the hospital's administrator and Walker's love interest. I have always like Linda’s work. Granted “ Scooby Doo ” was not a high point of her career, but she has turned in strong work in Freaks and Geeks, and “ Brokeback Mountain ” and could have a very interesting career if things go right.

Paul Walker is an interesting choice for this, and he did get a chance to spread his acting chops in “Flags of our Father”.
But more importantly is the question whether or not he will be having any type of nude/semi nude scenes. Something that pretty should really be shared. I mean look at him people……lordy is he a sight to behold.

Seriously, no woman broke my heart with their voice like Brenda Blethyn did in "Secrets and Lies". Looks like she is going to do it again. I really do love this woman! Here is hoping she is magnificant and gets Oscar nomination number three.

Today will be the day of the singer/songwriter, and especially focusing on the females who may not be as well known as they should be. So give a listen on my little box to the right hand side of me blog.

Tegan and Sara are identical twins from Alberta, Canada and I discovered them when this song was played during one of the only times I watched ‘ Grey’s Anatomy’. The twins tell comic stories on stage, a throwback to when they didn't have a lot of material but still wanted to give people a full show so sisterly bickering ensued. While both twins are similarly involved in vocals and playing instruments, the singing of the lead melody often goes to whichever twin wrote the particular song. Tegan writes songs prolifically, eventually discarding most of them. Sara's songs, on the other hand, evolve slowly and methodically and almost always make it onto the record. 'Where Does The Good Go' I think is one of Tegans.

Amanda Ghost would be most known to people as the woman who wrote James Blunt's 'Beautiful' but she had her own album, and I loved it. Her obvious, raw talent landed her a major record deal with Warners in Los Angeles, but this proved to be a depressingly familiar tale of a typical much-hyped signing; a move to LA; changes of personnel within the label; mystifying lack of A+R support and promotion and the eventual need for Amanda to resort to attorneys to extricate herself. Here I have probably her biggest solo song 'Idol'. There is a great video for it as well.

You may remember her as Winifred "Freddie" Brooks in the Cosby Show spin-off A Different World. Or you may remember her as one of the 70 animated characters between 1983 and 2006 that she has voiced. Among her most famous roles was in Tiny Toon Adventures (1990) as Elmyra Duff and Mary Melody (which she reprised for Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain), Aka Pella in Histeria!, Susie Carmichael in Rugrats and its spin-off All Grown Up!, Dulcy the dragon in Sonic the Hedgehog, Princess 'Kida' Kidagakash for Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Valerie Gray in Danny Phantom (2004).
You may not know that she released an album with friend Lenny Kravitz (yum) and it was rather good. This is ‘Smooth my Heart’ one of my favs.

Peter Jackson gets in bed with Dreamworks

Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel "The Lovely Bones" has found a home at DreamWorks. DreamWorks acquired the package late Friday, beating out Warner Bros. Pictures, Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures. Unsurprisingly it was not shopped at New Line. Going with DreamWorks does feel a little like a match made in movie heaven. It seems like the type of studio that really understands movie making and movie magic.


"Bones," which went out to the town on Monday, generated a lot of heat because of Jackson's name but came under intense scrutiny for the way it was being sent to market. Jackson and his team shopped the script with a budget in the $80 million range, complete with a start of production date and, uniquely, a focus on marketing. Integral to the deal were conversations about release dates and what other films the winning company will have in the same quarter, because Jackson wanted to know how time and attention will be divided between his movie and others. Smart move. Obviously New Line did a number on him, and he is really trying to protect himself and his team.

The picture is scheduled to begin filming in October in Pennsylvania and New Zealand, and will be distributed worldwide by Paramount.
The book, published in 2002, tells the story of Susie Salmon, a young girl who is murdered but continues to observe her family on Earth after her death. She witnesses the impact of her loss on her loved ones, while her killer skillfully covers his tracks and prepares to murder again. One must assume that to have four major studios fighting it out to make the movie, it must have been one hell of a script, although it being a beloved best seller some would assume the film would sell its self. Not true I say. I figure people would rather read that type of material then see it on the screen.
Considering Jackson's skill with violence, and his horror back ground, I can see the killing of the young girl being very shocking and graphic. It needs to be in order for the audience to really hate the killer (in the book what he does is horrific) and be pulled in emotionally to Susie's post death expereinces. Plus anyone who has seen "Heavenly Creatures" will know that he has the skill to pull this of beautifully, even iron out the flaws in the final chapters.

DreamWorks' acquisition had been predicted by some quarters since Jackson developed a strong relationship with Stacey Snider, DreamWorks' CEO and co-chairman, when he made "Kong" for Universal under Snider's stewardship as chairman. The move also puts Jackson in business with Steven Spielberg. In fact, one reason DreamWorks edged out its competitors was the connection felt for the material by Spielberg, who at one point was eyeing the project.

"Alice Sebold's story affects readers in deeply personal ways and the most important consideration for me was finding a studio partner who felt an equally strong connection with the book. Not just in sharing our emotional reaction to the story, but our desire to see it told in an original, adventurous way on screen," Jackson said in a statement.

Now the hardest part. Casting the lead.

Jill Scott represents everything that is right with R-n-B and soul music today. Unfortunately she is one of the few. Lyrically and musically she is superb abd this song is no exception. This is how I am feeling today, and just will go out on a long walk
