What I really want to comment on is the return of on of my favourite red carpet women who made a wonderful return to form. Nicole Kidman looked a vision.

The SAG awards sometime do like to throw some odd choices out there when picking their winners. These are actors voting so I am hoping that performance will win over popularity.
Could Gabby get some recognition here? It seems likely as I cannot imagine actors rewarding Bullock. Sure she may be popular, but by performance it should be a race between Sidibe, Mulligan and Streep. Streep just won so could they reward a fellow American in Sibide?
Lets hope so.
My out of left field predictions are ripe for upset and mocking, but what the hey.
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges - 'Crazy Heart' - He has yet to win one and is well respected.
Best Actress: Gabourey Sidibe - 'Precious' - I am sure I will be disappointed here, but how wonderful would it be for her to get some credit for a turn as equally wonderful as Mo'Niques.
Best Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer - 'The Last Station' - Remember Ruby Dee. They like to pay respect to a veteran.
Best Supporting Actress - Mo'Nique - 'Precious' - Head and tails above all the other performances.
Best Ensemble - 'Inglourious Basterds' - Has to be really, unless they go with 'Precious'. Both are truly wonderful examples of ensemble performance.

I will now just go and continue to listen to the brilliant album ‘Robyn’ by Robyn.
The news that Universal has bumped George Clooney’s period football pic "Leatherheads" into next year to give injured director-star George Clooney time to incorporate additional footage and honor previous commitments rings a little untrue. With the highly likely news that there will be a major strike from not only the WGA, but also SAG (that is the Writers Guild and Actors Guild) Hollywood must be in panic mode. The reason for the strike is that both unions’ contracts with the major studios are drawing to a close, and the writers and actors are wanting more moola in their deals, and of course the studios are not wanting to budge.
Why should we all care about this? Well for us movie fans, it could mean that 2009 will a barren wasteland for movies, or at least good movies. The WGA’s contract ends on October 31st, 2007, so no scripts will get written after this date without guilds approval. For the actors that date is June 30th, 2008 before the strike begins. Studios are now desperately buying up the rights to anything and everything so that they can get the films into production before March 2008 to have them finished before the contracts end.
There must be immense pressure on star names to make hast decisions when it comes to what to do next. Studios also will rush movies to be made. Both of these outcomes could damage a studio and an actors reputation. A movie is something that should never be rushed, it need care and attention to be a success, but the studios will not think of this. Actors on the other hand will rush making a decision and end up miscast, or worse yet, giving a half focused performance. Nicole Kidman has four films in various stages of production, all slated for 2008/2009 release. I am sure there will be more added. She is a wonderful example of an actor who at times appears to be stretched too thin to give their all to their characters.
Films like “Leatherheads” and “Stop Loss” have been pushed to 2008. The hotly Anticipated “Revolutionary Road” (pictured) is currently in post production, and could be finished in time for this years Awards race, but this is unlikely. The Studios need these movies for Oscar 2009 and they know it. I would not be surprised to see more films being pushed back for a late 2008 release.
There is some hope though. It is a scenario that actually excites me. With the big studios potentially having a sparse slate for 2009, this gives smaller, more interesting films the chance to get their head to the surface and take a big breath, which could lead to better films being made. Here is hoping the need for a post strike pay cheque can lead to writers pushing out fantastic original screenplays in time for the bidding war. Nothing is more inspirational in Hollywood than money remember.

Here they go. Trying to guess what the Screen Actors will do is usually easy, but not so much this year with all but 1 catergory up in the air.
Best Ensemble. The SAG's like comedys alot. Perhaps because all actors know that comedy is hard. Sidways, The Full Monty, The Birdcage, Gosford Park, Shakespear in Love, Chicago (a musical, but still in the same field). So in the past 11 years a comedy/musical have won the ensemble award. So barring Bobby winning, we are looking at the winner being the only true ensemble of the group:
Winner - Little Miss Sunshine
Best Supporting Actress. Helps to have a film nominated in Best Ensemble. Check Abigail Breslin, the Babel women, and Hudson. Helps to be a respected veterin or a head line grabbing bright young thing. Hudson the latter.
Winner - Jennifer Hudson just barely makes it though. Breslin or Kikuchi could still upset.
Best Supporting Actor. This usually goes to a respected actor who has been around. Tim Robbins, Iam McKellen, Christopher Walken, Albert Finney, Paul Giamatti, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Robin williams, Ed Harris, Martin Landau. The only deviation has bee Cuba Goodig Jr. This race is down to Alan Arkin, Eddie Murphy, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Winner - Expect Leo to take this one due to category fraud. (but Arkin and Murphy can still upset)
Best Actress...Ohhh difficult
Winner - Helen Mirren (unless they think she has already won for Gosford Park, and want to get Meryl up there. Unlikely...but food for thought)
Best Actor. Hmmm With Leo out of the way, and Ryan Gosling sitting this one out for now it looks like a 3 way race between Will Smith, Forest Whitaker and Peter O'Toole. It could really be any of these, but I am thinking they may want to award O'Toole. They didn't nominated Smith for Ali so the love is not over flowing there. The do like actors playing real like (Hoffman, Crowe) but they also like comedy (Depp, Benigni, Nicolson) I think O'Toole may just about take this. Last and only time the actors guild are likely to award him.
With all the bloggers getting upset about who wasn't nominated and who was put in the wrong category and so on, I would like to look at something a little different. Who was nominated. Race has always been a political hot button, and people walk on eggshells trying to be all PC about it. In reality Hollywood is a white American male world. No one can really argue with this without (to me) looking, shall we say, uninformed. However this year there is a vast amount of the acting talent that is not Caucasian. Could Hollywood finally be becoming a melting pot? When you look at just the SAG noms alone, 40% of the main nominated actors are not Caucasian and 25% are non American Caucasians. Fantastic!! The awards are going Ethnic and Global! All other minority nominees in the ensemble category make up 42%. Not bad at all. To think that an actor could not get their name written down during the nomination process because of their race is something that was very common not too long ago. Could it be that people responded to the performance and did not see skin colour, or hear accents? They could have gone with any of these worthy white actors - Annette Benning, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Michael Sheen, Mark Walberg, Catherine O'Hara, Emily Blunt, Aaron Elkhart and even Borat himself - but there were only five spots to fill. Who ever was nominated and for what ever reasons they weren't, doesn't matter. This should be a time to look at the fact that, at least for the SAG’s this year, being white is not the sh*t. I am sure if these norms translate into Oscar we will see alot of self-congratulatory articles creeping up in the press about the diversity of the year, but it only makes a difference if it continues. There is so much talent out there...CAST THEM!!!! However next year Hollywood could prove me so wrong, as it has again and again.
Just a leaving thought. Does anyone else find it kind of funny, that one year after the Oscars went all homophobic on us, they hire a big ole dyke to host? I am excited to see what she does, but they can’t expect to build burnt bridges so quickly.
Well the ole acting guild has struck again. They do like to mix up the acting categories, notice Leonardo is considered supporting for The Departed. The winners will be announced at 8 p.m. Jan. 28 in a live ceremony presented on TNT and TBS.
