Mini Review - Charlie Wilson's War

Well Aaron Sorkin must be a little pissed off. The man wrote a zingy crackling script that deserved so much better than it got.
Sure the direction is fine (nothing outstanding) but for some reason I felt a complete and utter disconnect from the film.

Tom Hanks was fantastic as Charlie Wilson, and is both humorous and sympathetic in the role. The women who play his various staff members are all memorable, especially Amy adams who decides to go for understated with depth in her characterization of Charlie's aid. Her scenes at the refugee camp ring with a truth that had been absent from the film.

Philip Seymour Hoffman has been completely overly praised for his scene chewing in this. He never seems like a real person, just a series of mumbled quips.

And now for Julia. My god was her hair distracting. The woman was almost unwatchable in this. Not her fault, but she is not capable of playing this part, it is not organic at all. She looks completely uncomfortable in this. If ever there was a role Nicole could play it was this.

Good attempt, but I expected much better. C

i havent seen the film so i'll try not to speak outof turn yet, but i have seen several documentries on charlie wilson and one in particular that was led by the woman who julia portrayed..and from what ive seen so far there isnt an english/australian actress that could have portrayed her..nicole is too chilly no matter what and i have yet to see a non-american actress really capture a northeastern american yet..southern bells, yes, without a doubt, uptight northwesterns no problem... toni collette a possibility. however i still have yet to see it. i think julia was a good choice, her charcter is ballsy and an american blueblood. sometimes you gotta leave it to the people that know it best!

Well the people who know it best obviously do not.

Firstly in the 80's Joanne Herring was much more beautiful. Julia looked liked the bastard child of Lady Penelope and Amanda LePore. Secondly, the snappy screenplay did not flow from her lips as it should have. It can across as uncomfortable line readings at times.

Nicole definately could have pulled it off. Better yet would have been Ashley Judd ( a younger Annette Benning would have been perfect) but Julia just did not pull it off. A shame as she is usually so charismatic.

its not about beauty but openness of character that very few types of people have...and one area is that northeastern american type of character. and nicole cant do it! but i take your point about julia's flaw in doing it. so, i'll reserve all judgement till after i've seen the film...xx

All Nicole has to do is combine the sexy charm in "To Die For", the presence in "The Golden Compass" and the snappy line delivery of "Margot at the Wedding and she is there.

But I forget...you are a Juliaphile and pink is your signature colour.

I thought Julia was terrible too, and I see what you mean about Nicole. If Amy Adams were older she would have been so much fun!

i DID say i was going to reserve my judgement of julia's performance till after i see the film.
