I was acting like another woman, yet I was more Oscar than ever before.

So back here I asked you to vote in a poll to see who you thought should have been crowned Best Actress in 1995.
The results are long in:

Everyones favourite crazy snatch flasher, Sharon Stone, got ZERO votes for her performance in 'Casino' and she was second choice after Madonna.

The wonderful Emma Thompson could only manage 13% of the votes for her wonderful performance in 'Sense and Sensibility'.

Surprise nominee Elisabeth Shue only managed 17% of the votes, she has more adventures whilst babysitting than she did 'Leaving Las Vegas'.

Eventual winner for 'Dead Man Walking', Susan Sarandon was only 22% popular for her 'overdue' Oscar winning performance.

So with a mammoth 48% of the votes the wonderful Meryl Streep wins this for 'The Bridges of Madison County'

Well it is no surprise really.
This is one of those performances that was so brilliant, you hardly noticed.
It would have probably gotten more attention had she not been against Sarandon and been going through a quiet period in her career.

However, 3rd Oscar or not she is one of the greatest, and this is one of my favourite Meryl performances of all time. The way she is both mother, lover and wife for different people, playing each role amazingly, even if they do not all fit together.

Clint Eastwood did her a great service with this, and the performance has left a legacy.

Now onto Best Supporting Actress for 1995

Which of these will get some end of year awards traction? None, one, all?

Anyway, here they are.

'Eat, Pray, Love'

Gosh I love Julia - is there anyone more charming? And I love Viola (naturally not getting a lead role, but stuck with supporting Best Friend - will black actresses ever get a break?) and this looks like a nice charming little film to get lost in. Here is hoping there is a little more meat than what is on offer in the trailer. Seeing as how it is based on a true story one would hope so.

'Switch'

The old turkey baster switcheroo eg? Here we have Anniston coasting on her charisma. Perhaps there are some risks being taken here, perhaps not. I just wish she would take a risk and step out of her comfort zone just so we can see if she can. If she fails then back to rom coms. Anywhoo, it looks kind of cute, but that child has already annoyed me.

'The Greatest'

See Susan and Pierce hysterically grieve. See Carey Mulligan try and live up to the expectations thrust upon her.
The story does seem kind of full of schmaltz, but it could be a little grittier. Trailers do have a way of making all drama seem very 'Lifetime'.

'The Lovely Bones' trailer

Well here it is. To be honest I was hoping for something a little darker for the trailer. The book was so well liked, and Peter Jackson is such a respected director that I wonder why the decision was made to get so much into this.

From what I can tell it looks like Susan Sarandon gets the best trailer acting clips. I have a feeling this will end up being all about Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci.

Will have to wait and see.

Oscar says that most people speak rubbish

Well you voted in the ten of five for this award. The 1993 Best Supporting Actress as voted by you would end up going to:

Drum roll please....

In tied 4th place we have Holly Hunter for 'The Firm' and Winona Ryder for 'The Age of Innocence' with 9%.

In 3rd place we find Emma Thompson for 'In the Name of the Father' with 13%

In 2nd place we have Rosie Perez for 'Fearless' with 17% (she should have gotten more votes)

And in first place with 52% is Anna Paquin for 'The Piano'

Now Oscar is not scared to give young girls awards, especially over young boys, so this was not that big of a shock when it happened, although people still think it was.

She definitely got my vote (with Rosie a very close second),and I am hardly ever that impressed with child performances. What she did was not try and act older than she was. She acted like a selfish and silly little girl who does not understand what is happening around her.

And if you didn't think she deserved it by the performance....the footage of her winning the Oscar should have made up your mind. She was adorable!

Talked about this earlier, when mentioning Susan Sarandon, but forgot to mention Ed Norton is in fact, playing dual roles.
Liking the poster. Thinking now this stand a great shot of major awards buzz for him



I love the ominous bottom half of the poster. Not sure about the green lettering though. Almost as if the art department went "You know, green, for leaves and grass."

Looking Ahead

It looks as though 2009 is going to be an interesting year for one very busy actress.
In terms of film, she has five on the way, one of which is very high profile.

Of course I am talking about Susan Sarandon.


In ‘The Greatest’, about a family still coping with the death of their son when their son's girlfriend reveals that she is carrying his child, she stars with Peirce Bronson. It could be ‘Moonlight Mile’ territory, or it could be wonderful. This is writer Shana Feste’s first film as director so we will have to wait and see.

‘O’ and ‘The Grey Zone’ director will point his lens towards her in Leaves of Grass’. Sure the title is terrible, but this crime drama has a fantastic cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Edward Norton, Keru Russell and Melanie Lynskey.

She co-stars with Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy and Bill Pullman in the thriller Peacock.

The Michael Douglas starrer Solitary Man should get some notices (advance word has been very good) especially with such a talented cast.

And finally she has a key role in the little film you may have heard about called The Lovely Bones.


Could 2009 be the year of the Sarandon?

I so thought I knew who was going to win this.
I so figured it would be the person I wanted it to be, but it wasn't. But I cannot really argue with the eventual winner.
Sentimentality won out in the end, and don't we all vote with our hearts when the time comes.
This was a rather good year for the Supporting Actress as it is usually the weakest acting category.
The winner (pictured) had a long and illustrious career, but Oscar only really took notice later in it. Always the last ones to jump on the band wagon.

With a disappointing 5% at the bottom of the heap we have Diane Lane in 'Rambling Rose'

In forth place we find Kate Nelligan in 'The Prince of Tides' with 10%
Third place sees the eventual winner Mercedes Ruehl with 18% of the votes for 'The Fisher King'.

The person I so thought would win is in second with 30% of the votes. Little Juliette Lewis in 'Cape Fear'

So the winner is (probably because Dean and Lee voted many times on different computers) is Jessica Tandy for 'Fried Gren Tomatoes' with 38%.

She was a worthy winner I guess, but I was more of a Lewis fan at the time, even if she did sport corn rows.

So onto 1992 Best Actress!

Oscar, you in danger girl

So the results are in for the upteenth poll.

I had asked who, out of the lovely five women nominated in 1990 for Best Supporting Actress, should have walked away with the trophy.

In 5th place our beloved President Laura Roslin - ie Mary McDonnell in “Dances with Wolves” with absolutely no votes. Sniff

In 4th place with a measly 5% we have Dr. Jennifer Melfi herself (aka Lorraine Bracco for “Goodfellas”) hope she doesn’t arrange a hit on the winner – Ohhh I am a riot with me TV references!

In 3rd place we have the crazy ole lipstick face painter Marietta Fortune herself. I actually though Diane Ladd would win this for “Wild at Heart” but she only managed to muster 9%.

Which means 2nd place had a massive lead with 32%. But do we expect anything less from Mrs Warren Beatty? Sure she came close, but Annette Bening’s performance in “Goodfellas’ was not enough to stop…

….Celie from taking gold with a nice lead of 55%. What can we say, the populous wins out (well yeah), and is it any surprise that the winner is probably the most seen film of the bunch?

Whoopie Goldbergs performance in Ghost seems at first to be your typical black comedic supporting performance. However under Goldbergs expert delivery it becomes something deeper and much more cunning. Many other actors would have played this role for all the racial stereotyping they could muster. Whoopie however tries to find some truth and depth in a shallowly written role.
Her presence is felt so much in the film that she becomes our emotional anchor. We laugh because of her, we fear for her, we even want her to keep the money she gives to the nuns, but mostly, when it is her turn to say goodbye to Sam, we cry.
We all know it was a make up Oscar for “The Color Purple” but still we are glad she got it in the end.


We move up a year next…fancy that! We will look at 1991 when the nominees to choose from were…..

From The Hollywood Reporter”

Susan Sarandon is joining the cast of Peter Jackson's film adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel "The Lovely Bones."
Sarandon will play the character of Grandma Lynn, the mother to the character played by Rachel Weisz.
The cast also includes Ryan Gosling and newcomer Saoirse Ronan.

Is Sarandon a good choice?
Hell yeah!
She is a good choice in anything, but I think the serne quality she can bring to her roles will serve this production extremely well!
Could I get any more excited? Only if the other casting news comes to fruition
