The best of the year (not a movie list)
Well it is that time of year again. As I sit home with the flu (teach me to over work myself over Christmas!!) on New Years eve I am remembering the year that was. What was good, and what was bad. I will list these off in top 10 form, but in no particular order.
The good:
1 The movies were great this year. Or perhaps I have only gone to see movies that were good by making decisions based soely on critical reviews and my own instinct.
The worst film I have seen all year was “La Vie En Rose” and I still came away looking to download a whole pile of Edith Piaf and singing the praises of the lead.
I still have not seen some of the heavy heavy hitters yet, and that can only make this one of the best years in film.
2 Adam Shankman’s wonderful job in “Hairspray”. Say what you will, but the man actually made me excited about the movie musical, and its endless possibilities. “Moulin Rogue” was the pinnacle for me, and since that masterpiece I have slowly given up hope that the musical is back, so thank you Adam for restoring that hope!
Not only was the cast fantastic (even John Travolta warmed to me in the end) but you perfectly captured the giddy musical loving child in me.
Also I have missed big ole dance numbers on the screen. So thank you again.
3 Music charts….if the radio stations were not bribed to play such repetitive shit I would not have gone out searching for something new and exciting and discovered new works by these wonderful artists” Robyn, Siobhan Donaghy, Roisin Murphy, M.I.A. (pictured), Amy Winehouse, Mika, LCD Soundsystem, The Arcade Fire, The Gossip and many more.
4 With so many young actresses and pop stars falling over the edge, it was refreshing to see one of the youngest being able to put her celebrity to better use. Hayden Panettiere risked her life to try to save a family of dolphins being slaughtered by Japanese fishermen.
Not everyone may agree with her actions, but how many of todays tabloid chasing celebs do you see fighting for injustices they believe in? Watch it here….warning disturbing!!
5 Madonna. Celebrating the Goddess in my ‘I LOVE Madonna’ tribute, bought it all back to me. She is AMAZING.
6 Pixar. Not only did they get things SO right with “Ratatouille” (perhaps the best film of the year) but then they go and cause me to shriek with delight and spin around in excitement by releasing the trailer for “Wall-E”. I know you should never judge a movie by its trailer, but I am so going to love this!
7 Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8 comic. Thank you Joss, for not letting the best TV show die. I have read the first 5 of this series and it stays true to the show while giving you that extra freedom that live action couldn’t allow.
Damn you Sarah Michelle Gellar for walking out!
8 Diablo Cody. I have not seen “Juno”, so I know you will all wonder why I am mentioning this larger than life screen writer?
Well because since there is a massive writers strike, this woman could not have come along at a better time.
With star salaries sky rocketing to undeserved heights, the writers (you know, the people who are responsible for the actual story of the movie, and the dialogue these over-paid under-fed actors are saying) are all but forgotten.
Now we have a celebrity writer in Diablo Cody who is not only getting loads of press for herself, but she is also on the picket lines fighting for pay.
I do not remember a celebrity screenwriter before her, and why not? It is about time the spotlight was shone on these guys…they deserve it.
9 Tom Cruise becomes Box Office poison. YAY!!!!!
10 All you bloggers who I have added to my “Blogs I read and admire” list to the right. You have all humoured me and educated me so much this year. I thank you all!P

Box - Love my box (Sitges memories edition)
Well these are the songs that reminded me of my wonderful fantastic life changing week in Sitges a nice little town south of Barcelona.
First up I will give you one of the tracks from one of the two albums I bought at the airport on my way there. Choosing just one track was near impossible as the whole album “Ghosts” by Siobhan Donaghy is brilliant, but I had to do it (not really as I am doing two).
The first reminds me of the bf laying on the bed, post siesta. He looked so relaxed and comfortable and that made me very happy. “There’s a Place” was one of his favourites, off an album I was pleasently surprised he really liked.
”Take your time, be it mine cause I will be all the strength you need”
I am as stated picking two songs from “Ghosts”. This album just reminds me my trip so much so much, and it really was just the perfect place for me to relax and unwind and this album makes me feel that all over again. This song (my choice) is “Make it Right”.
”Don't lose control of this misery. Why pacify? Just punish me. Seperate from this pain up on me. Don't let me take this liberty”
Next up is a song from the second album I bought at the airport. M.I.A.’s “Kala”.
I loved her first album, and her second is no exception. If the world was right, this would be huge.
I couldn’t decide out of two songs, but remembered I had already put “Paper Planes” on the blog, so here you have “Come Around”.
”Check my coat in and I paid the dollar,
Sidekick rings, "what's up? holla!"
Text the address, I'll see you later
Baby come down
Come down, come down, come down
run down, run down, run down
Run, make a run, make a run, make a run, make a run, make a run down
A dun da da dun da da dun da da dun da da dun dun
Beat goes on
A dun da da dun da da dun da da dun da da dun dun
Beat goes”
And lastly the dancing. We had such fun in Spain, but the best night was the last one (for many tall blonde reasons) as we were dancing in “Mediterraneo” till the wee hours.
The song that sums this up was “Heater” by Samim. If ever a dance song made me smile with no lyrics it was this.
The best use of the accordion that I know.
Bonus point for the joyous expression of the bf's face as this tune was turned out on the dance floor.

The return of M.I.A.
After her absolutely brilliant debut album "Arular" she retuns with "Kala". And she follows it up with another corker of an album.
You Tube has most of the songs up in some format, so I urge to click on the video below and give them all a listen!! (read her Wiki page, she has lead an interesting life.)
(Andra this means you!!!)
The song and video for 'JimmyI is so much fun, and quite commercial sounding for her. I also urge you to check out the song "Paper Planes" (At the bottom of the post) as it just proves what considerable talent this young woman has.
"Paper Planes" (lyrics)
I fly like paper, get high like planes. If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name. If you come around here, I make 'em all day. I get one down in a second if you wait

Sometimes I feel sitting on trains. Every stop I get to I'm clocking that game. Everyone's a winner now we're making that fame. Bonafide hustler making my name
Sometimes I feel sitting on trains. Every stop I get to I'm clocking that game. Everyone's a winner now we're making that fame. Bonafide hustler making my name
All I wanna do is (BANG BANG BANG BANG!), and (KKKAAAA CHING!), and take your money
All I wanna do is (BANG BANG BANG BANG!), and (KKKAAAA CHING!), and take your money
All I wanna do is (BANG BANG BANG BANG!), and (KKKAAAA CHING!), and take your money
Pirate skulls and bones. Sticks and stones and weed and bombs. Running when we hit 'em. Lethal poison through their system

No one on the corner has swag like us. Hit me on my banner prepaid wireless. We pack and deliver like UPS trucks. A radio in hell just pumping that gas

Thursday - Music I am listening to day.
Yes yes, the last post I said I would do music on Tuesdays, and Music Video Back Track would be Thursday, but whoops! I totally forgot. So children full of woe day (me!) will always have a post about music.
Today M.I.A.. Her album Arular was raved up and down the place, and I bought it unheard and love love loved it. I guess growing up in a place where I was surrounded by soca, grind, ragga and dancehall has made this easier to digest then those who have not. The BF HATES it and thinks it is just noise. Well boo to him. So here is M.I.A. with Bucky Done Gun.
