"My Sisters Keeper' Trailer

Ok, so it scores highly on the slush fest, but 'The Notebook' was a very popular film and I am wondering, especially with the subject matter, just how the actors (especially Abigail Breslin and Cameron Diaz) are going to score with the critics. Beslin can do no wrong, and Diaz is still waiting for that 'serious' role that will land her in Oscars arm.
Oscar doesn't shy away from slush, so this could be one to watch out for.

Hiatus update

Hello faithful readers.

Just to let you know what is going on.
My nine in a half year relationship with the love of my life has come to an end. Aside from the heartbreak that I am going through (Christian may have loved Satine, but he has no idea) I need to focus on moving and getting myself sorted out.

I will be back though, and hopefully I will be back better and more focused than ever.

Breaking up is a hard thing and unwinding our lives together is complicated and painful, so I have decided not to post about my passion for movies and music until I am in a better more stable place (not to say I am 'Girl, Interrupted' unstable however).

Thank you for your patience and I hope to back posting about this mystery that is the entertainment industry very very soon.

Florence and the Machine

New talent alert. Florence and the Machine hail from London and are a combo of punk, indie and soul. The first single was 'Kiss with a Fist'.
Florence will collect the Critics' Choice Award at the Brit Awards in February 2009. The previous winner of that awards was Adele.

Oscar says that most people speak rubbish

Well you voted in the ten of five for this award. The 1993 Best Supporting Actress as voted by you would end up going to:

Drum roll please....

In tied 4th place we have Holly Hunter for 'The Firm' and Winona Ryder for 'The Age of Innocence' with 9%.

In 3rd place we find Emma Thompson for 'In the Name of the Father' with 13%

In 2nd place we have Rosie Perez for 'Fearless' with 17% (she should have gotten more votes)

And in first place with 52% is Anna Paquin for 'The Piano'

Now Oscar is not scared to give young girls awards, especially over young boys, so this was not that big of a shock when it happened, although people still think it was.

She definitely got my vote (with Rosie a very close second),and I am hardly ever that impressed with child performances. What she did was not try and act older than she was. She acted like a selfish and silly little girl who does not understand what is happening around her.

And if you didn't think she deserved it by the performance....the footage of her winning the Oscar should have made up your mind. She was adorable!

Whaling

Edward Zwick takes one step closer to my hate list with the news he is setting out to direct a film called 'Heart of the Ocean' about how the little old lady in Titanic unwittingly wakes up a preserved and frozen Jack by throwing her necklace overboard.
Just kidding.
The film is about a whaling ship apparently "stalked" and sunk by a sperm whale in 1820. The Nantucket whaling ship the Essex was sunk, and its crew marooned at sea for over 90 days. They resorted to cannibalism to survive; only eight of them made it back. This is the inspiration for the book 'Moby Dick' and it is not going to do a whole lot for the plight of whales. (remember 'Jaws' and now sharks are endangered!).

One would think that in this day an age, with the natural world on the brink of being destroyed, there would be some sensitivity coming from Hollywood to perhaps think things through. Sure the whale got it revenge on the people trying to kill him, but you know Zwick.....he loves his slushy survival tales.

I for one will be rooting for the whale.

'Limits of Control' trailer

Aside from the Lynchesque trailer there are many reasons to want to see this movie. Jim Jarmusch, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Gael García Bernal, John Hurt, Hiam Abbass and Isaach De Bankolé.

We will see what the word from Cannes is (I assume it will premier there).

Downsizing

After many many many forgettable rom coms, it seems Reese Witherspoon may be going back to what made her great in the first place. The star is once again teaming up with her 'Election' director Alexander Payne (who is reuniting in this with his 'Sideways' star Paul Giamatti) for 'Downsizing', a story about people shrinking in size.

This is all still in the preliminary stage as the screenplay is not yet finished and there is still the question of budget as the special effects required may push things way over budget.

The plot sees Giamatti play a man with money troubles. He decides that life would be a lot cheaper and easier is he was smaller. So he goes in for a procedure to shrink himself. After the procedure he meet a girl and a pint sized foreigner who will be played by the wonderful Sasha Baron Cohen. This sounds just kooky enough to work.

Ohhhh, another comedy drama about growing up and families in suburbia. Perhaps it is territory that has been treaded a wee too few many times, but still I have heard very good things about Cynthia Nixon's performance. And I love her!
